Make & keep
Remove a plain background from a portrait copy in Preview
Use Preview’s background removal on a duplicate and convert the result to PNG when prompted.
Preview can attempt to remove an image background, which may help isolate a person for a layout or sticker. It is a cutout workflow, not a reliable restoration of hair or transparent details. Make a copy first: accepting conversion can change the original image to PNG.
Make a working copy
Open the portrait in Preview and choose File > Duplicate. In the duplicate, click Remove Background. If Preview asks to convert the document to PNG, choose Cancel and duplicate the original first if you did not already; choose Convert only for the working copy. PNG supports the transparent result.

Inspect the automatic cutout
Inspect the outline around hair, glasses, clothing, and shoulders against both light and dark backgrounds. Background removal may leave halos or remove a hand that overlaps the backdrop. If the edge is not clean enough for the intended layout, undo the operation or return to the original and use a different image.

Save a separate PNG
Save the cutout as a new PNG with a filename that marks it as an isolated subject. Open the file against a contrasting background in the destination app to reveal pale fringes. Keep the full portrait untouched; the transparent PNG is a derived design asset and should not replace the source photo.
