HEIC photos and a photo strip editor: check compatibility

Convert a copy when the editor needs JPEG, PNG or WebP.

Download Flashroom for iPhone

An iPhone photograph can be a perfectly valid image while using a format a particular web editor does not accept. Changing the filename extension does not change the encoded image.

The documented formats

Apple explains HEIF capture and ways to export media in a more compatible format. Its Most Compatible camera setting affects new capture; it is not a command that converts every earlier photograph.

Evidence: Product documentation

Prepare a real converted copy

Use a suitable export or conversion feature to make a JPEG or another format accepted by the destination. Keep the original. Open the new file outside the converter and check its pixel dimensions, orientation and visible image. A file called picture.jpg can still contain incompatible data if it was only renamed.

Test the complete layout

Add the converted copy to the editor and inspect the crop in each window. Flashroom’s web editor accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP; these web designs are separate from the app’s booths. Finish by reopening the exported strip and checking that every intended photograph remains present.
