Make & keep
Annotate a photo-strip proof without flattening the markup
Convert a review copy to PDF before adding arrows or labels that you may need to adjust later.
Markup added directly to an image file cannot be moved or removed after the image is saved. Preview’s guide recommends converting the image to PDF when annotations may need later changes. Use this for a review proof with arrows or frame numbers, and keep the unmarked scan as the source.
Create a separate PDF copy
Duplicate the image in Preview and save or export the duplicate as PDF. Open that PDF, show the Markup toolbar, and add text, arrows, shapes, or highlights to explain the frame order. Place notes outside the face and the printed image whenever possible so the annotation does not hide evidence.

Add and adjust the marks
Select an annotation in the PDF to move or resize it while preparing the proof. If you instead mark up a JPEG or PNG and save it, the annotation becomes part of the image and cannot be moved or deleted later. Do not annotate the only copy of a family or archival photograph.

Keep the source and proof distinct
Save the PDF under a name such as review-with-notes, then close and reopen it to confirm the marks appear correctly. Keep the original scan and the PDF side by side, and label the PDF as a marked review copy. The PDF is better for editable markup, but it is not the same output as an unannotated full-resolution image.
