Photo Booth camera not working on Mac
Separate a camera problem from a permission, app or external-device problem.
Start by describing the failure: a black preview, no detected camera, a frozen application or an export that will not save. Those symptoms need different checks. Preserve existing photographs while troubleshooting; deleting the photo library is not an appropriate first response to a camera problem.
Check whether the camera works elsewhere
Quit Photo Booth and other camera sessions, then test the camera in another appropriate app. Note whether an external camera appears and whether the built-in camera behaves differently. If one source works and another fails, record that distinction before changing settings. Check connections and power for external devices.
Follow the official camera checks
Apple’s troubleshooting guide covers software updates, Screen Time restrictions and a restart for Apple-silicon Macs. It gives different guidance for Intel hardware. Apple’s camera-access documentation also notes that built-in apps such as Photo Booth already have access; a missing permission toggle is not by itself evidence of a fault.

Identify the app-specific problem
If only Photo Booth freezes, write down when it happens: opening the app, switching cameras, choosing an effect or recording. Try a simple still before a longer video. Make sure the disk has usable space and that an export folder can accept a normal file. These observations help distinguish capture from storage problems without risking your saved pictures.
Know when to stop changing things
Do not paste unrelated terminal commands that kill every camera service or remove user files. When the indicator behaves unusually, the camera fails across apps or Apple’s ordinary checks do not resolve it, use official support with your model, macOS version and exact symptom.
For a party happening now, arrange a backup camera and save files separately. Restoring a reliable capture route is more useful than repeatedly changing settings while guests wait. Diagnose the original problem after the event.
