How to use Photo Booth on a Mac
Single portraits, four-picture sequences and video in Apple’s camera app.
Apple’s Photo Booth is a Mac camera application, distinct from a physical photobooth or a wedding rental. It is a useful place to begin a simple portrait session with a built-in or connected camera. This guide covers the documented capture modes and a practical setup for making their results look intentional.
Choose the capture mode
Apple documents a single-picture mode, a four-picture sequence called a 4-up photo, and a video mode. Select the appropriate control before capturing. If the capture button is unavailable because you are viewing an earlier item, return to the camera view.

Frame with a saved test
Place the Mac on a stable surface and bring the camera near eye level. Remove distracting objects at the sides of the frame. Look towards the lens when direct eye contact matters, then inspect one saved photograph for headroom and posture. A screen tilted to suit typing may make a poor portrait angle.
Plan the sequence
For four pictures, decide the changes before beginning: neutral, turned slightly, amused, then a final gesture. Keep the same chair or standing position throughout. A screen can act as a light source, but room lighting and a bright background still affect the image; move your setup rather than expecting an effect to repair every lighting problem.
Keep a usable export
Save the finished item outside the app when you want to use it in another project. Check the export guide for whole items, individual frames and originals. A 4-up image is not automatically a narrow 2×6-inch strip. If that is your goal, choose the layout and physical print size separately.
Menu wording can vary with the installed macOS version. Use Apple’s version selector when an instruction does not match your screen, and avoid installing an unrelated app merely because a search result also uses the words “photo booth”.
