Clear Nikon camera conflicts before opening NX Tether
Find and close software that already claimed the connected camera.
A Nikon camera can be visible to the computer yet unavailable to NX Tether because another transfer or camera-control app has it open. Check the documented conflicts first; this is a faster diagnosis than changing cables or reinstalling software.
Close competing Nikon apps
Quit Nikon Transfer 2 and Camera Control Pro 2 before launching NX Tether; Nikon states they cannot be used together. On macOS, avoid selecting a network-connected camera in Image Capture if you intend to use NX Tether, since that can prevent a later connection.

Connect directly
Use a direct camera-to-computer USB cable rather than routing through an adapter where possible. Nikon warns that an adapter can cause the NX Tether connection to end unexpectedly. For Ethernet-capable bodies or a WT-7 setup, follow the camera’s own network instructions and verify the computer is on the appropriate network.

Verify one fresh capture
Launch NX Tether, select the camera in its camera list, and take one test image. Confirm the file reaches the destination you chose. If it still fails, note the body, connection type, and which other apps were open; support documentation varies by camera, so do not assume a generic USB fix applies to every model.
