Make & keep
Trim empty scan margins to the image bounds in GIMP
Fit the canvas to a selection when a scan has excess blank space around its contents.
A digitised strip can sit in a large white scan area that makes previews and downstream sizing awkward. Select the useful area, then fit the canvas to that selection. Keep a full scan copy before trimming, because the blank margin may contain notes or edge details.
Select the content
Use a selection tool to include the complete strip and any border or handwriting you intend to keep. Zoom in on corners and avoid tracing into the printed frame. Save the selection boundary before committing if you may need to adjust it.

Fit the canvas
Choose Image → Fit Canvas to Selection. The canvas becomes the selected area; inspect the edges for accidental clipping and confirm the artwork itself has not been scaled.

Compare to source
Toggle to the untrimmed scan or reopen it beside the result. Check whether the original paper boundary or archival note should be retained in a separate record copy. Save the trimmed access version under a distinct name.
