Check flash recycling when every few booth frames go dark

Trace periodic underexposure to flash readiness during rapid capture sequences.

A sequence can begin at the right brightness and then show occasional dark frames when the capture cadence outruns flash readiness. That pattern is different from a fixed exposure error: it often follows closely spaced shots or a long run. Track brightness against time and charge status before changing the camera’s baseline exposure.

Map the problem to capture spacing

Make a short sequence at the booth’s normal trigger interval and mark which frames are dark. Repeat with a longer pause between shots. If the dark frames disappear when the interval increases, investigate flash recycling, battery condition and thermal or power limits rather than colour processing. Keep guest position and ambient lighting stable so the sequence isolates timing.

Read the readiness signal

Canon’s Speedlite manual documents an indicator while the unit recharges and a separate state when ready. It also describes a quick-firing mode before full charge that can produce reduced output; its manual warns that continuous use can underexpose. These details are model-specific, so use the indicator and operating instructions for the actual flash installed in the booth.

Choose cadence with evidence

Test the longest expected unattended run, not only a handful of frames. If a slower trigger interval prevents dark frames, make that the operating cadence or use equipment rated for the required sequence. Do not compensate by raising all exposure: that would overexpose frames when the flash has fully recycled and leave the intermittent fault unresolved.
