Why changing shutter speed may not freeze a flash-lit face
Separate the flash pulse from the shutter interval when a moving face or hand remains blurred.
A flash photograph can look as though the shutter should have frozen everything, yet a moving hand may still leave a trail. The key diagnostic is whether ambient light continues recording motion during the exposure. Shutter time and flash-pulse duration are related to the final image in different ways, so changing only one control can leave the blur unchanged.
Compare flash-lit and ambient edges
Inspect a moving hand, hair edge or shoulder in a test frame. A crisp flash-defined edge with a faint duplicate or smear indicates that ambient exposure recorded movement around the flash image. A uniformly blurred edge suggests camera or subject movement during the effective exposure; repeat with a shorter exposure within the camera’s allowed flash-sync behavior.

Know what the shutter controls
With normal flash synchronization, the shutter sets how much continuous room light accumulates while the flash contributes a brief burst. Canon’s manual-exposure guidance explicitly treats flash exposure for the subject and background exposure as separate results. Therefore, a shorter shutter can suppress ambient trails without necessarily changing flash brightness, while aperture and flash output affect the flash-lit exposure.

Run a controlled pair
Keep the subject mark, aperture, flash power and room lights fixed. Make one frame at the current shutter setting and another at a faster permitted setting, then compare both the sharp flash edge and the ambient shadow or trail. If the room becomes too dark, increase flash contribution or controlled ambient fill rather than assuming a faster shutter lengthens the flash pulse. Stay within the camera and flash maker’s sync limits.
