Choose a canvas around your photo strip
Give the portrait room without shrinking it into illegibility.
A strip can sit inside a larger page or vertical canvas. The outer shape and the portrait’s readable size should be planned together.
Start with the destination
Find the actual dimensions or aspect ratio requested by your printer, display or sharing destination. Keep those requirements separate from the strip’s own proportions. Create a rough canvas with a replaceable strip so you can judge spacing before spending time on decorations and final caption wording.
Place the portrait first
Size the strip so eyes and captions remain readable at the expected viewing size. Leave useful space around it, but avoid scaling it down merely to accommodate decorative furniture. If adding a second strip, compare the portraits as a pair rather than assuming both need identical outside margins.
Review a realistic copy
View the result at normal screen size or print a small proof. Check whether the surrounding space supports the picture or overwhelms it. Keep a strip-only master and a canvas version, clearly named. Different destinations can then receive appropriate copies without repeated crops of the only original.
