World Press Photo began as a Dutch photographers’ initiative

The 1955 contest was intended to connect Dutch photojournalists with international colleagues.

World Press Photo is known today for awards and exhibitions, but its founding purpose was exchange. The organization’s own history traces the first contest to a Dutch photographers’ initiative intended to expose local journalists to work from abroad.

A competition built for contact

The first contest took place in 1955, following an idea among members of the Dutch photojournalists’ union. They wanted an international counterpart to the national Zilveren Camera competition and a way to encounter photography from other countries.

The inaugural World Press Photo of the Year went to Mogens von Haven’s image of a motocross competitor falling from a motorcycle. That subject shows the contest began as a broad press-photography award rather than a narrowly political prize.

Evidence: Institutional history

From award to exhibition and education

The organization’s history describes a wider program that developed from the first contest: public exhibitions, seminars and training. Its first seminar was held in Budapest in 1990, followed by the Joop Swart Masterclass in 1994.

Those activities matter because photojournalism is shaped by who sees images and how photographers learn. The institution became a platform for circulation as well as selection, allowing audiences to encounter pictures beyond their original newspapers.

A global frame with limits

An international contest can make work visible across borders, but its selection is still curated and cannot represent every image made in a year. Awards show what a jury recognized, not a complete map of world photography.

For portrait culture, the relevant link is public circulation: both a booth strip and a press image travel beyond the moment of exposure, though their control, audience and purpose differ sharply.
