Make & keep
Make a JPEG copy of a HEIC photo in Preview
Export the image to JPEG under a new name while keeping the HEIC original intact.
Some websites or print workflows accept JPEG more reliably than HEIC. Preview can export an image to another file type. Export a second file instead of renaming the extension: a filename change alone does not convert image encoding, and overwriting the HEIC would remove a useful source copy.
Duplicate before exporting
Open the HEIC in Preview and choose File > Duplicate. In the duplicate, choose File > Export. Enter a new filename that identifies the result as a JPEG copy, choose JPEG from the Format menu, and select a destination folder separate from the original’s location if you want a clear source/output distinction.

Export the requested format
If the export dialog offers a quality control, use it to balance file size against fine detail; inspect small lettering and edge detail on the strip. Do not claim the JPEG is lossless. The conversion produces an image file, and supported metadata or edit information may differ from the library item.

Verify the copy
Open the exported JPEG in Preview and use Tools > Show Inspector to check the format and pixel dimensions. Keep the HEIC untouched as the original and send the JPEG only where compatibility requires it. If the export looks too soft, repeat from the source with a higher quality setting rather than re-encoding the first JPEG.
