Test a polarizer before using it to reduce glasses glare

Determine whether an optical polarizer helps a booth portrait without sacrificing needed light.

Reflections from glasses can obscure eyes, but a polarizing filter is not a universal glare switch. Its effect depends on the angle and polarization of the reflected light, and the filter also reduces the light reaching the camera. Test the exact camera, glasses and booth-light geometry before making it a permanent part of a fixed capture setup.

Rotate the filter while watching the reflection

Nikon describes a polarizer as a rotating optical element that can reduce some reflections. With the guest at the normal mark, rotate the filter and observe whether the reflected patch on the lenses changes while the eye detail remains visible. If there is little change across rotation, the setup may not provide useful suppression; change light or subject geometry instead.

Account for lost exposure

A polarizer reduces transmitted light, so a booth with limited flash or shutter flexibility may need a fresh exposure and focus test after it is installed. Check the farthest guest position and a sustained run, not only one frame. The filter can also alter reflections from skin and glossy props, so compare the full portrait rather than judging only the glasses.

Do not promise universal results

A polarizer cannot remove every reflection, and crossed polarizers on the light and lens are a different, more engineered arrangement than adding a lens filter alone. Record whether the test improved eye visibility without unacceptable exposure loss or uneven colour. If not, adjust light angle, camera angle or guest pose; these changes often address the source of the reflection directly.
