Disposing of photographic chemicals responsibly
Keep product information and local collection rules together.
A disposal method cannot be chosen from the word “photography” alone. Used developer, fixer and colour-processing baths are different materials, and collection arrangements depend on location. Plan the route before generating waste.
Product guidance has a location
ILFORD’s domestic-disposal guidance explicitly distinguishes UK arrangements from other countries and advises checking local provisions. It describes separately bottled, appropriately labelled chemicals for suitable local collection. That advice is not a worldwide permission to pour every bath down a drain.
Evidence: Manufacturer guidance
Our collection checklist
Make a list of the exact products and whether each container holds concentrate, working solution or used solution. Ask the relevant collection service what it accepts and in what container. Keep the manufacturer’s safety sheet available and record the answer and date. Do not mix unidentified wastes to save storage space.
Keep the session manageable
Include waste containers in the bench plan, with readable labels and suitable closure. Check the storage and transport requirements supplied for the products and the receiving service. If the collection route is unresolved, postpone the chemical session rather than creating a bottle whose contents or destination nobody can explain.
