Choosing film chemistry: ILFORD, Kodak, Foma and CineStill
A comparison by process and working habits, with supplier claims clearly identified.
There is no useful universal winner if the products do different jobs. Begin with the process printed on your film, then compare preparation, documentation, usable capacity and how often you will process. The examples below are product descriptions, not results from our own laboratory test.
Traditional black-and-white choices
ILFORD offers liquid ILFOTEC DD-X and powder developers including ID-11. Kodak’s D-76 documentation describes a general-purpose black-and-white developer. Foma describes FOMADON R09 as a liquid concentrate for black-and-white negative film. These names offer starting points for a documented film-and-developer combination, not permission to swap times between products.

Colour is a different comparison
CineStill’s Cs41 kit is intended for C-41 colour-negative processing. Compare it with another C-41 system, rather than judging it as a substitute for D-76. Confirm the kit version and read its own mixing, processing and safety documentation before deciding whether its workflow suits your home setup.

Compare a usable session
Our buying sheet has six columns: process, exact product, supported film, preparation, working volume and instructions available. Add the cost of the amount you expect to use before expiry, using current local prices. For infrequent processing, unused working solution can matter more than the advertised cost of a very large batch.
