Make & keep
Make visual notes on a portrait sequence
Describe the frames before interpreting the sitter.
A sequence offers visible changes, but those changes do not prove a person’s thoughts.
Record each frame
Note eyeline, posture, hands, crop and background in order. Use neutral descriptions such as looking left rather than assuming a private emotion. Compare the entire strip before isolating one dramatic frame. Keep observations linked to the object identifier so another reader can check the same image.
Label your interpretation
Write any reading of mood or narrative separately as your interpretation. Avoid diagnosing personality or health from a portrait. If using the notes in an exhibition label, pair the interpretation with the known date, medium and source record rather than presenting visual speculation as biographical fact.
