Make & keep
A photo strip reproduced in a newspaper
Catalogue the printed reproduction and the original separately.
A newspaper image can document how a portrait circulated without being the original photographic object.
Record the publication
Note the newspaper title, issue date, page and caption as printed. Preserve a full-page reference as well as a close view when permitted. Distinguish the publication date from the sitting date. Keep any editorial crop or altered frame order visible in your description of the reproduction.
Connect rather than replace
If you also hold the original strip, link the two records using separate identifiers. Describe differences in crop, contrast or sequence. Do not use a poor newspaper reproduction as a reason to overwrite a good original scan. Check rights and access conditions before republishing the newspaper image.
