Make & keep
Put an index card inside a photo strip box
Make a stored collection understandable without opening every envelope.
A short box record helps someone find a portrait while leaving the rest of the collection undisturbed.
Summarise the contents
Write the box identifier, range of strip identifiers and location of the full catalogue on a separate card. Include a handling note for any fragile item. Avoid listing uncertain people as confirmed owners. Keep the card with the storage arrangement rather than attaching it to a photograph.
Evidence: Preservation guidance
Update the map when things move
Record a relocation in the catalogue and on the box card. If an original is temporarily borrowed, leave a separate location note with its identifier. A collection that is beautifully labelled but inaccurately mapped can still be difficult to use; test retrieval after any reorganisation.
