History
Photo-Me and the everyday booth
One manufacturer’s story, from a 1954 customer to redesigned cabinets.
A familiar name on a station booth can make a long history appear to start there. Photo-Me is an important commercial chapter, but its own timeline begins decades after the early automatic portrait experiments.
A company milestone
ME Group dates the first Photo-Me customer to 1954 and its stock-market listing to 1962. These are company milestones, not the birth of automatic photography or evidence that earlier booths belonged to the same operator.

Utility and pleasure
A machine used for documents can also be a place for playful portraits. Purpose changes the rules: a souvenir expression may be unsuitable for an identity application. The same enclosure does not make the outputs interchangeable. Check the instructions for the particular session before you spend money or choose your pose.
A changing cabinet
The company records a new generation of booths designed by Philippe Starck in 2011. This is a design milestone, separate from the invention date. Manufacturer histories are useful for their own products; claims of worldwide priority need wider evidence. Notice how the cabinet’s entrance, seat and instructions guide the sitter before the camera takes a picture.
