Jacques-André Boiffard before the booth camera
A photographer becomes the subject of an automated portrait.
An automated self-portrait of Jacques-André Boiffard appears in the Centre Pompidou’s Surrealist group of photographs.
The small surviving print
The museum dates the gelatin silver print to around 1929 and records dimensions of 4.3 × 3.8 cm. Its inventory reference is AM 2003-287 (1). The record’s bibliography includes a later Boiffard exhibition catalogue, offering a research route beyond the thumbnail and short description.
Evidence: Collection record
Separate portrait and photographic practice
The sitter’s broader work does not make every visible gesture in this portrait a documented artistic statement. Compare the linked object with the museum’s other Boiffard records if researching his practice. Keep attribution, represented person and your own interpretation clearly distinguishable.
