Why infrared dust removal works differently on colour and silver film
Some scanner cleanup systems can mistake a silver image for dust.
Automatic infrared cleaning can save time on some scans, but it is not universally compatible with every photographic material. Check how the scanner treats the image-forming layer before enabling it.
Understand what the system detects
Infrared dust-removal systems use an additional scan channel to find surface obstructions. The method depends on the infrared appearance of the film image, which differs by material. A setting that works with a colour negative may not work the same way with a silver-based black-and-white negative.

Make a paired test
Scan a replaceable frame with cleanup both on and off. Compare fine hair, dark edges and scratches, not just visible dust. If detail disappears or marks are miscorrected, disable the feature and use a careful manual workflow on a derivative.
Keep an untouched master
Save the uncorrected scan and note the cleanup setting, scanner model and film type. Automatic repair can alter both real image detail and defects. For valuable originals, prioritise a reversible digital correction and leave physical cleaning to an experienced lab or conservator.
