Diagnose drying marks without confusing them with image detail

Surface residues can sit on the film after processing and become visible in scans.

A pale ring or streak on a scanned photobooth negative may be on the film surface rather than in the photographed scene. Check the physical strip before retouching the image.

Look at the surface in reflected light

Rotate the negative under a gentle light and check whether the mark changes with the viewing angle. Surface drying marks may be visible as deposits or irregular sheen; image detail remains tied to the emulsion image. Avoid wiping the strip with household materials.

Evidence: Manufacturer guidance

Compare both sides carefully

Use a clean loupe and identify the emulsion and base sides before deciding where a mark lies. A scratch, dust particle or water residue can scan sharply even when it is hard to see unaided. Record the frame number and side so a trained lab can assess the original.

Retouch a copy

Keep a raw scan of the strip, then make any spotting correction on a derivative. Do not treat image-editing cleanup as evidence that the physical negative is repaired. If the emulsion is damaged, ask a photo lab or conservator before attempting any cleaning.
