How did George Eastman House become a museum devoted to photography?
A 1947 charter created an institution to collect, preserve and study photography and allied technologies.
George Eastman House was chartered as an independent nonprofit museum in 1947 and opened to the public in 1949. It used George Eastman’s Rochester mansion as a memorial and developed collections devoted to photography, cinema and the technologies that support both.
A museum built around media history
The institution’s history notes that the University of Rochester donated Eastman’s mansion and grounds after the museum’s charter. Its mission includes collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting photographic and cinematic objects from the beginnings of each medium to the present. This scope joins images with cameras, film and other material evidence.

Conservation is part of the story
Photographic objects are vulnerable to light, humidity, chemical change and physical damage. A museum can preserve negatives, prints, cameras and film in different conditions and make them available for research. Such preservation work helps explain why a famous historical image may survive in only one fragile object or a later reproduction.

Personal portrait versus collection
A photo booth delivers a print for an individual to keep. A museum gathers photographs into a long-term public collection with catalog records and conservation needs. The comparison shows two afterlives of photographic objects: private memory and institutional stewardship.
