Scanner resolution and interpolated pixels are not equal

A larger output file does not prove that a scanner captured more detail.

A scan application can enlarge an image by estimating new pixels. For a small photobooth frame, check the scanner’s optical sampling and the actual captured detail before choosing a very large export size.

Check the source dimensions

Record the scanner’s optical resolution setting and the resulting pixel dimensions. Some software offers interpolated sizes that increase the file’s pixel count without adding new detail from the negative. Keep this distinction clear in an archive record.

Inspect a real target

Use a sharp edge and fine repeated detail from the image to see whether higher optical sampling resolves more information. Avoid judging only by file size or a 100-percent screen view, because display scaling changes apparent sharpness.

Export for the intended use

Choose a scan size based on the desired print dimensions and viewing distance. Preserve a high-quality master if future cropping matters, then make a smaller share copy. Upscaling can make a file meet a requested pixel size but cannot restore detail the scanner did not record.
