Film & darkroom
Label a darkroom print without confusing its history
Connect the print to its negative and printing session.
A print can be made long after the original exposure.
Separate the dates
Record the negative’s known exposure date and the actual printing date as different fields. Include the roll and frame identifier and printer’s session reference. Keep any uncertainty explicit. A modern print from an old negative should not quietly acquire the negative’s year as its only object date.
Use an appropriate label method
Follow suitable photographic-handling and storage guidance rather than writing across the image. Keep a separate catalogue record and digital reference. Note edits or cropping used in the print, so the object remains traceable to the full negative rather than only its displayed composition.
