Record a contrast choice separately from exposure
Keep two printing decisions visible.
A print note becomes clearer when filtration and exposure have their own fields.
Use the selected paper guidance
Check how contrast is controlled for your paper and enlarger. Record the actual filter or head setting, not only a description such as softer. The ILFORD paper documentation describes its variable-contrast system; the appropriate controls depend on the equipment and material being used.

Compare labelled proofs
When changing contrast, keep a labelled proof and evaluate the relevant tones. Recheck exposure as needed using the documented workflow. Avoid changing several settings and then attributing the result to only one of them. Preserve the final approved combination in the print record.
