Why megapixels alone do not predict booth portrait detail

Pixel count is only one part of the imaging system that determines fine detail.

Two cameras with the same pixel count can show different eye and hair detail. Resolution measures more than the number of addressable pixels: it also reflects how the imaging system handles fine detail.

Count detail, not just pixels

ISO 12233 distinguishes pixel-count protocols from resolution. In the standard’s terms, resolution is a camera’s ability to capture finely spaced detail, while spatial-frequency response (SFR) describes how contrast changes across detail scales. Equal pixel dimensions therefore do not guarantee equal visible detail. This article uses the standard’s public preview for concepts, not as a claim that a booth test conforms to ISO 12233.

Follow the whole imaging chain

Lens performance, sensor sampling and image processing all contribute to camera resolution and SFR. Processing can include sharpening, compression and gamma correction. As details become finer, contrast generally falls until the camera no longer records them as visible detail. A crisp-looking edge after sharpening does not by itself show that finer texture survived.

Judge the delivered strip

A pixel specification describes the file’s sample count, not every scene’s result. Cropping, resizing and the final print size affect which captured detail remains visible in a narrow booth strip. Compare finished outputs at the same crop and print size; a larger upscaled file does not prove that the camera captured more fine detail. If a face looks soft, check focus, lens and processing as separate parts of the imaging path. ISO 12233:2024 is a digital-camera measurement standard, not a universal portrait-quality score.
