Inside the booth
What is a photo booth?
A guide to the camera, the countdown and the photographs behind an unexpectedly broad name.
A photo booth is a place or system that lets people make portraits through a repeatable, usually self-service sequence. It may be a curtained machine, a camera on a stand, or software on a phone. The name describes an experience more reliably than one particular cabinet.
The essential sequence
Choose the session, stand or sit within the frame, follow a countdown, and collect the result. A traditional strip repeats that sequence across several exposures. An event booth may instead deliver one photograph, an animated sequence or a video. Ask what the final output is before choosing the experience.
Three different meanings
A public machine is a physical destination. An event booth is equipment or a service brought to a party. A photo booth app is software using a device camera. These overlap visually but solve different problems: finding somewhere to visit, entertaining guests, or making a strip at home.
Apple’s Mac app, also named Photo Booth, can take a single picture, a four-picture sequence or video. Its name does not mean it hires out a cabin or automatically produces the same print as an arcade machine.

What makes it feel like a booth
The camera stays in place while the person changes. That constraint is useful: four small gestures can become a miniature story. A plain first frame, a glance sideways, a shared laugh and a final wave are enough. Props and filters are optional; consistency of framing does more to hold the sequence together.
Before your first session
Look for the lens rather than the preview screen, leave room around faces, and notice whether the countdown repeats. Check the price, number of exposures and print or download options before starting. For identification photographs, select the dedicated document mode and follow the relevant official rules. Souvenir filters and playful poses belong to a different session.
