Digital booths
Separate photon noise from read and quantisation noise
A dark photobooth frame can show more than one kind of random variation.
Grain-like speckle in a digital portrait is not always a film effect. Sensor noise can come from light arrival, electronic readout or later conversion, and each source suggests a different way to test the camera.
Three sources, three stages
Photon shot noise varies with the number of arriving photons; read noise enters as the sensor signal is read; quantisation noise is associated with converting analogue values into digital levels. The visible result depends on exposure and the camera’s processing pipeline.
Evidence: International standard
Make a controlled pair
Photograph a uniform midtone and a shadow region at the booth’s normal settings, then repeat with more light while keeping framing fixed. Compare original files at equal size. If brighter capture cleans the shadows, exposure and available light matter more than an added grain filter. A bright dot that repeats at the same sensor coordinate across dark frames points toward a fixed-pattern pixel defect, while changing speckle is more consistent with temporal noise. A long exposure or warmer sensor can make dark-current effects more visible; confirm with repeated source files before retouching.

Avoid treating all noise alike
Denoising can remove texture along with speckle, while sharpening can amplify noise. Preserve the original capture and apply changes to a copy. For repeated-strip consistency, lock exposure and lighting where the camera allows it, then evaluate the result at intended print size.
