Fosso uses self-portraiture to inhabit the visual legacies of Black political and cultural figures.

In African Spirits, Samuel Fosso transforms himself through costume and pose to evoke influential figures from twentieth-century Black liberation movements. The series uses portrait conventions as a way to address memory, identity and political history. It is a constructed art project, not a photobooth self-portrait series.

A cast of historical references

The Menil Collection dates African Spirits to 2008 and identifies figures Fosso portrayed, including Angela Davis, Martin Luther King Jr., Patrice Lumumba and Malcolm X. The artist appears in the images, but the works point beyond autobiography toward shared histories and the power of recognizable visual codes.

Transformation as method

Costume, gesture and lighting make each image legible as an act of transformation. Fosso does not merely reproduce a famous photograph; his performance invites viewers to think about how political icons are remembered and how images travel across generations. Portraiture becomes a tool for historical conversation rather than a record of a single moment.

Compare the authorship

In an ordinary booth, a user may take on a temporary pose for a keepsake. Fosso’s work makes role-playing central and carefully planned, with the artist directing the construction of each image. The useful link is performance before the camera; the differences lie in purpose, authorship and the historical references built into the work.
