A booth’s history includes the people who repair, collect and use it. The organisers’ account of the 2009 International Photobooth Convention in Chicago shows those communities meeting in one place.

The organiser’s record

Photobooth.net’s convention page describes a panel including collector and historian Nicholas Osborn, artist and writer Näkki Goranin, film archivist Brian Meacham, convention founder Steve Howard and operator Anthony Vizzari. It also records activities and photographs from the gathering.

Evidence: Organiser account

Different kinds of expertise

An operator can explain maintenance, a collector can trace objects and an artist can discuss how the machine enters a practice. Those perspectives complement one another without becoming the same evidence. An event participant’s recollection is useful when it remains attributed to that person and moment.

Read the archive as a past event

The page is a record of 2009, not a current booking invitation or live location guide. Follow dated links when tracing a story and keep the original event date in your notes. If you organise a small gathering of your own, record who contributed and which machines were actually present rather than describing it as a worldwide census.
