Make & keep
Keep a record when straightening an archive scan
Separate a convenient view from the raw capture.
A small rotation can help a scan sit neatly on a page while changing how its edges are presented.
Preserve the full capture
Save the unrotated master with all object edges visible. Straighten a duplicate and inspect the resulting crop. Do not remove marginal notes or a damaged edge merely to create a regular rectangle. A complete view lets another researcher see the actual object rather than only your preferred presentation.
Evidence: Preservation guidance
Label the derivative
Use a clear filename or record field identifying the straightened copy. Note any crop or tonal edits along with the rotation. Keep dimensions measured from the physical strip in the catalogue rather than deriving them from an altered display file. Reversible presentation choices protect future research.
