Make & keep
A practical filename recipe for scanned strips
Name masters and edited copies so they stay distinguishable.
A filename should connect a scan to its original, not carry every uncertain piece of family history.
Begin with an identifier
Use the collection identifier followed by a useful view label, such as front or reverse. Keep names short enough to manage and avoid punctuation that causes trouble in your own file system. Write names and dates in the catalogue instead of constantly renaming masters as your research changes.
Distinguish working versions
Add a suffix for an edited, sharing or print copy. Keep the untouched capture in a master folder and record how derivatives were made. Open a sample after copying it to your backup location. A clear name helps retrieval; it does not replace a working backup or a catalogue connecting the file to the physical strip.
