Make & keep
Describe the condition of an old photo strip
Use observable details instead of an improvised diagnosis.
A clear condition note helps you monitor an object without claiming conservation expertise.
Write what you can see
Describe a tear, curl, stain, fading or detached fragment and its location. Make a reference photograph without forcing the strip flat. Avoid diagnosing a chemical cause from appearance alone. Record changes only when you have a comparable earlier observation, not just an impression that the portrait seems different today.
Evidence: Preservation guidance
Use the note to guide handling
Keep fragile items supported and seek a qualified conservator for treatment advice. Do not apply tape, household cleaners or heat because a condition label sounds simple. Store the note with the catalogue and preserve earlier photographs so later assessment has a usable comparison.
