How did “Migrant Mother” become more than one photograph?
Lange made a sequence at Nipomo; captions and later accounts complicate the iconic image’s public story.
Dorothea Lange’s 1936 photograph commonly called “Migrant Mother” came from a larger set of exposures made at a pea-pickers’ camp in Nipomo, California. Its familiar frame is not the whole encounter: the Library of Congress preserves several related images and caption records, while museum accounts document disagreement about parts of the story later told about the sitter.
Read the image sequence
The Library of Congress identifies multiple images of Florence Owens Thompson and her family from March 1936, including versions with different camera distances and captions. The original negative for the most famous frame is noted as missing. Looking across the series reveals the photographer’s changing distance and helps prevent a single crop from standing in for the entire session.

Caption and memory can diverge
MoMA notes that Thompson later challenged parts of Lange’s recollection, including the reported sale of car tires. That conflict does not erase the image’s documentary value; it tells readers to distinguish a photograph, its contemporary caption, the photographer’s later memory and the sitter’s account. Each is a different historical source.

What a strip records differently
A booth’s consecutive images often preserve small changes in expression in one short sitting. Lange’s sequence belongs to documentary work and a wider government project, not a booth session. Both examples show why an image series can tell a more careful story than one celebrated frame alone.
