Max Ernst in an automated portrait

The machine’s attribution remains part of the object record.

The Centre Pompidou identifies Max Ernst as the subject of a Photomaton strip from around 1929.

The recorded print

The object is catalogued as a gelatin silver print measuring 15.8 × 3.8 cm, with reference AM 2003-288 (1). PHOTOMATON appears in the artist field. The museum records a 2003 purchase and places the strip within Le groupe surréaliste.

Evidence: Collection record

Avoid a convenient attribution shortcut

Calling it a portrait of Ernst is different from asserting that Ernst is the catalogue’s attributed maker. Preserve that distinction when writing about automated images. The linked group portrait featuring Ernst and the Aurenches offers a second documented object, not evidence that every strip was made in the same sitting.
