Make & keep
Bring referenced strip scans into a Photos library on Mac
Understand when Photos points to a file outside its library and consolidate it before relying on iCloud or library backup.
Photos normally copies imports into its library. If “Copy items to the Photos library” was turned off, Photos can instead reference files at their existing Finder locations. Those links save a second copy in the library, but they have different backup and sync behaviour.
Check where the file lives
Select the scan and choose File > Show Referenced File in Finder. A referenced item lives outside the library; disconnecting its drive or moving or renaming it can break the link. It is neither included in a normal Photos-library backup nor stored in iCloud Photos for other devices. Back up the external files separately.

Consolidate selected scans
Select the referenced scans to bring inside the library. Choose File > Consolidate, then click Copy. Photos copies them into its library; with iCloud Photos on, the consolidated items can sync to other devices using that library. For a large drive, start with a known set and check available storage.

Keep a clear archive boundary
Consolidating changes where Photos manages a file; it does not replace backup. Verify the scans appear before reorganising the external source. For future imports, Photos > Settings > General controls copying into the library. Choose a consistent archive policy and document the location of anything left referenced.
