Correct a green or magenta cast on its own white-balance axis

Separate a tint mismatch from a warm or cool colour-temperature mismatch.

A neutral card can still look greenish or magenta even after the image has been made warmer or cooler. Many camera white-balance controls separate those adjustments: one axis moves between amber and blue, while another corrects green and magenta. Treating both as a single temperature slider can make a cast harder to diagnose.

Identify the direction of the cast

Photograph a neutral reference under the booth light and compare it with a trusted neutral rendering. If changing colour temperature only makes the sample warmer or cooler while the green-magenta cast remains, use the separate tint adjustment if the camera offers one. Keep the reference under the same illumination as the guest rather than under a different room light.

Understand the two controls

Nikon’s current guide describes amber-blue adjustment as corresponding to colour temperature and green-magenta adjustment as having an effect similar to colour-compensation filters. The axes address different dimensions of the white-balance correction. Menu increments and control behavior vary across camera models, so consult the manual for the installed body instead of copying another camera’s numeric setting.

Lock the result into a booth test

Adjust one axis at a time using the same neutral target and unchanged exposure. Once the neutral patch is close, check skin, saturated clothing and a grayscale ramp; an adjustment that neutralizes the card can still shift other colours under a discontinuous LED spectrum. Save a reference frame and record the body, light and white-balance state so later comparisons remain meaningful.
