Make & keep
Rotate a sideways strip scan in GIMP without turning one layer by mistake
Choose the image rotation command for a whole scan and the layer command for one component.
A scan may open sideways, or a single imported portrait layer may need rotation inside a composite. GIMP separates whole-image rotation from layer transformation. Decide which object is wrong before applying a turn, then save a separate copy to keep the unaltered scan nearby.
Identify the target
If the entire scan, including every layer, is sideways, use the image rotation command. If only one inserted photo or caption layer is turned, select that layer and choose its transform command instead.

Apply a quarter turn
Use the 90-degree clockwise or counter-clockwise choice when it matches the scanner orientation. For a custom correction, use the rotation tool and inspect the canvas boundary; a rotated layer may extend beyond the visible canvas.

Check orientation
Compare text, faces, and strip perforations carefully with the full source scan and edges. If the image canvas clips a rotated layer, expand the canvas or reposition the layer before export. Reopen the saved copy to confirm the orientation persists.
