When a face looks too bright, it is tempting to turn the camera’s exposure compensation down. In a booth using flash, that may affect the wrong part of the exposure or behave differently by mode. Camera exposure compensation and flash exposure compensation are separate controls on many systems. Identify which part of the frame is wrong before turning either one.

Compare subject and background

Use a test frame with both a flash-lit face and a visible background. If the face is too bright while the background is acceptable, reduce flash contribution; if both are too bright, inspect the camera’s ambient exposure settings. A neutral card and fixed guest position help reveal whether the change affects the whole frame or the flash-lit subject most strongly.

Know what flash compensation changes

Canon describes flash exposure compensation as an adjustment to flash output, with supported controls and precedence depending on the camera and flash. Camera exposure compensation asks the camera’s metering system to shift its standard exposure; actual behavior also depends on shooting mode and ISO automation. Read the manuals for the exact equipment because a setting on the flash can override one on the body.

Run one-variable tests

Lock shutter, aperture, ISO, light position and subject mark. Make a baseline frame, then change flash compensation only and compare face highlights; restore it, then test camera compensation separately and observe both face and background. Keep only the control that corrects the intended region, and save the final settings with a sample image to prevent a hidden duplicate compensation later.
