Set film-scanner focus by checking holder height
A flat negative can still look soft when it sits outside the scanner’s focus plane.
Film scanners and flatbeds do not all focus at the same physical height. A holder that positions a strip above or below the intended plane can soften detail across an otherwise sharp negative.
Confirm the holder specification
Check the scanner manual for the supported holder and film orientation. Some systems have fixed focus; others permit a focus adjustment or different holder position. Do not place film directly on glass unless the scanner manufacturer describes that method for the model.

Run a repeatable focus check
Scan one detailed frame at the normal holder height, then compare a small controlled height change only if the device allows it. Use the same focus point, resolution and sharpening. A useful result shows fine edge detail improving consistently rather than merely increasing digital edge contrast.
Separate focus from curl
If one edge is sharper than the other, inspect film flatness and holder seating. Curl may move parts of the negative through the focus plane. Keep the film clean and use an approved holder or mount; do not press the emulsion against a surface to force flatness.
