Practise loading a reel with expendable film
Learn the movement before working in darkness.
An already expendable practice roll can make reel loading less mysterious.
Use the actual equipment
Follow the reel’s instructions and practise with material you can afford to sacrifice. Check the correct film-format setting and learn where the film enters. Do not use an important exposed roll for a daylight demonstration. Stop if the film binds instead of forcing it into a groove.

Rehearse the complete arrangement
Find the tank, centre column, lid and tools by touch in the intended loading space. Keep sharps arranged safely and verify the light-tight procedure for your equipment. Practice with expendable material does not prove that a later valuable roll is correctly loaded; repeat the equipment check every session.
