How does Carrie Mae Weems use a kitchen table as a portrait stage?

The Kitchen Table Series uses one domestic set and a recurring protagonist to build a narrative across staged photographs.

Carrie Mae Weems’s Kitchen Table Series is a sequence of staged photographs made in 1990. The artist appears as a recurring protagonist in an ordinary domestic interior, where the table and overhead lamp anchor scenes involving relationships, solitude, children and friends. Its consistency makes changes between images especially visible.

A recurring set, changing relationships

The National Gallery of Art describes twenty carefully staged photographs and fourteen text panels. The stable kitchen setting gives the series a theatrical structure, while changing people and interactions develop the story. The arrangement makes domestic life a subject for sustained observation rather than a single illustrative moment.

A work built from text and image

The portfolio combines platinum/palladium prints with screenprinted text panels. The words are not merely captions under individual photographs; together, image and text shape how viewers read the sequence. The museum record also distinguishes the original 1990 series from prints produced in 2003, a reminder to describe the work and its physical edition accurately.

Connection to photobooth self-presentation

A booth can offer a repeated background and a short progression of expressions, but Weems’s staged series uses that visual consistency across a larger narrative. The comparison helps explain how a repeated setup can make differences meaningful. Weems’s work is an authored artwork, not a booth experiment.
