History

How did 220 film differ from 120 roll film?

The 1965 format kept the same width but offered roughly twice the film length per roll.

Kodak introduced 220 roll film in 1965 as a longer alternative to 120. The two formats shared film width and frame sizes, but 220 had no backing paper alongside the image-bearing film; paper remained at the roll’s ends, allowing about twice as many exposures. Camera backs had to be designed to handle the different loading and frame-count system.

More frames on the same width

The Deutsches Kameramuseum groups 120 and 220 roll film as related medium-format materials. Wikipedia’s 120 film article distinguishes 220 as the same width with approximately double the length. This let photographers make more exposures before changing rolls while using familiar camera formats that supported the longer roll.

A compatibility detail that matters

A camera that accepts 120 does not necessarily accept 220, because backing-paper and frame-count detection differ. When identifying negatives or camera accessories, the spool format matters even when the frame itself looks the same. This is a useful example of why film format is a workflow standard, not just a measurement.

Connection to booth sequences

A booth usually offers a fixed number of exposures on one session, whereas 220 increased the number of frames available to a photographer across an assignment. Both organize pictures into a sequence, but one is a consumer-service workflow and the other a film-capacity decision.
